I have an idea for burlap that I have used for VBS.  It could also be used for Sunday School.

Before class I took brown burlap (any color would work) and stiffened it with a mixture of two parts glue to one part water.  After the burlap was dry, I cut it in the shape of a cross.  The children glued decorations on the burlap and we added a hanger on the back for hanging.  It was a particularly good craft to use around Easter.  It could be used with many lessons.

To make the burlap easier to handle when stiffened it, I would cut the material in long strips about 6 or 8 inches wide or whatever width you wanted to make the cross.  I then hung the pieces on a hanger and left dry in my laundry room.  You just want to put paper or a piece of plastic under the hanger to avoid a mess.  The kids did like doing it.  You do need to use tacky glue or a glue gun to secure the material on the cross.

You can make bean bags for Sunday School games that are really durable out of burlap fabric. Cut out two six inch squares of burlap fabric, sew along three sides, fill about half way with dried beans or rice, and then sew the fourth side shut. The burlap holds up a lot longer than felt or traditional fabric bean bags. You can also make shape bean bags by cutting out circles, triangles, or anything else you want.
