1) Memorizing Old Testament Books
Dear Fran,
I use a pneumonic device to help the kids learn the Old Testament books. It is based on taking the first letter of the Old Testament book and making it a more common word. The kids in my class came up with these words. Feel free to use these or to have your students come up with their own pneumonic.
* Go Eat Lettuce Not Doughnuts (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) * Jane Just Retired (Joshua, Judges and Ruth) * Sausage Keeps Cool Every November Evening (1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.) * John Pops Popcorn Every Sunday (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon or Songs) * Irene Just Lost Every Dime (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel) * Hilary Just Approved Olivia Jones' Money (Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah) * Never Hide Zebras Here Zack Mason (Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi)
I hope these help. Connie G.

2) Good News Chorus
is made by Child Evangelism Fellowship. I won't tell the words because of copyright laws, but she can probably Contact them on-line and order the song sheet. It is still printed on "newsprint" type of paper - my children love shouting the part that Ends: "that's wonderful, EXTRA good news"......

4) Creation
Just wanted to let you all know that there are some great resources at "Answers in Genesis" for children. We have recently been impressed with the DVD "Dinosaurs, Genesis and the Gospel" and are incorporating it into a month workshop rotation. Also some of the songs by Buddy Davis have a catchy limerick component which has brought some different type of music that the kids are enjoying into our program.
Thanks Sarah for co-ordinating such a fantastic network.

You may, or may not, recall a posting I made that month relative to a hymn I was looking for, "But This I Know." After posting, within a few days I received in the mail the music for that hymn from a lady in Hawaii. And you were kind enough to post my thanks.
It was interesting to me that her reply was the only response I received. And, later I sang the song in church, and expect to do so again. . . . . . Well, on Monday, this week, while I was out I received a phone call from a Christian young man, inquiring about that hymn, the title, etc. That evening I talked to him. He resides in Las Vegas, NV, attends Hill Baptist Church. He said he had been going through old E-mails, came across my original posting in Jan. 05, which prompted his call to me. Apparently, he was affected by the message of that hymn, as I was.
Anyway, today I sent him a letter and the music and lyrics of the hymn. He seems to want also to find out if there is an arrangement available for instruments, etc.He and I thought circumstances relative to tracing the hymn were indeed unique. It is evident of how the Lord owrks in ways we could not anticipate or plan ourselves.

6) Growing in God's word?
I am new to this and don't have time to look through the archives. Can anyone help me quickly? We are beginning a Growing in God's Word theme in our Sunday School and I need some good songs, object lessons, etc. to help me out. Thanks so much, and I am so glad to have found this wonderful resource.

We are planning to use the S.C.U.B.A. theme for our VBS this summer. Does anyone have any decoratiing, bible stories, and craft ideas for this theme? You can e-mail me at rpena@texas-heart.net or post your ideas at SSN.

8) Teaching Unchurched Kids
Hollie, Thank you for your comments. They were an inspiration to me, and I love the phrase "Christianity as a Second Language". I must remember that. It is so easy to forget that everyone did not grow up learning about the Bible and Christ. Mary

9) Pre-teen class
Praise God! We just started our 'tween' class in September - for kids from 10 - 12 years old. There is a definite need to reach kids in this age group. This is actually a great age group - they are ready for more responsibility and are enthusiastic they are also very honest. We have about 10 kids with 2 teachers.
We had a small room and we purchased some comfy couches, chairs and a small table - so it is more like a 'coffee house' type feel. All of the kids love it (not just the ones in that class).
Teaching in this class is very interactive - reading the Bible -and bringing it to daily applications. The kids are very open about situations in school and home and so it is easy to help them understand how to apply their learnings to every day situations. Every now and then we ask them what they want / what they like / what they would change. They have told us that they still like to do 'hands on' things - so for an activity we had the kids make a collage (cutting pictures from magazines that they felt dealt with the topic) and gluing it onto poster board - it actually makes some nice artwork for our walls! Some of the kids have asked if they could teach a lesson - we gave them the opportunity - they really only spoke for about 5 minutes about the topic / story and had some great questions & games that they asked the rest of the class. It was a great way for them to see if this is something they enjoyed without any fears and as a teacher it is encouraging to see what they know and how they understand things. Once they were 'finished' teaching - you can continue talking about the topic so that they don't feel like they were just a little part of the class and then you went to the 'real' stuff - it takes much more work for the teacher but worth it in the end. We have had this age group help work on puppet shows as well - at first they were a bit hesitant - but after the first time they were excited to be doing it again. It doesn't sound like your church uses a specific curriculum - my belief - with teaching any age group - is that a specific curriculum doesn't matter - what matters is that they know you love Jesus and that they know you love them. Many of them don't know or hear that they matter or that someone loves them.
God bless - we'll keep you in prayer.

10) All Aboard--God's Celebration Train?
We are in the process of planning our Vacation Bible School and the theme this year is "All Aboard--God's Celebration Train". Would love any ideas that we might incorporate into this theme and if anyone knows where we can get conductor hats or banadanas, I would love it! (or any other "train" prompts".
